Tortoiseshell pickguards? (Bass and Guitars)?

11th November

Are the tortoiseshell pickguards that are usually on the vintage basses actually made from tortoiseshells like the old Dunlop picks were?

On guitars made before about 1940 yes, they really made the pick guard from tortoise shell. This only applies to acoustic guitars though. I'm not aware of ANY guitar made after that where genuine tortoise shell is used. From about 1950 on they are all made from cellulose. It looks the same and costs about 1/10 as much to make.

which is better, the make of Cort guitars or make of Vintage guitars?

9th November

i want to know which one is better… cause i'm gonna buy a new bass guitar…

both are generic el-cheapo brands produced as the lowest of the lowest quality by factories producing low-spec instruments for others.
Avoid them.

Fun on bass guitar

7th November

Yours truly playing a couple of simple tunes - “Silent Night” and “Moonlight Sonata” - on bass guitar.

Played on a Vintage EJM96 bass, into a Mackie Onyx Satellite. Slight hall reverb from an Alesis Picoverb in the Satellite’s insert loop. Recorded in Tracktion, with no amp sims, just a touch of software EQ and compression.

Question about bass guitars?

7th November

Okay, I’m looking to buy my first bass guitar soon. I have no real musical experience before, but I’m looking to get into music and the bass has always interested me.
I was searching for a bass and I came across one that I immediately loved the look of:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Hofner-Icon-Series-Lefty-Vintage-Violin-Bass?sku=515042&src=3SOSWXXA
(yes, I play left handed)
My question is this…since this is a semi hollow bass, would it sound much different from a solid one? Will I be unable to play anything ska or punk like with it simply because of how it’s made?
I just need to know if I’ll be limiting my playing range right off the bat, because I really would love that bass.
And if anyone has any suggestions for a better starting bass, feel free to share them.
Thanks.

Here's the deal:
The sound will be exceptionally different to a trained ear. If you want to do ska or punk, a Fender would probably have the best, most traditional sound, but you can play any style on just about any bass. This hollow, violin base would be for something more folksy or earthy sounding… but you can play anything in it. You won't limit any playing range, you can play all the notes in any style on this, but they will sound with some more reverb, thanks to the body.
Slaps will be much more resonant, normal plucks not so much. Go to a store like guitar center and see if they have it in a respect you can try them out.

What is the purpose of the metal pick-up covers on a bass guitar? (like on vintage P and Jazz basses)?

They're simply for show.

Rickenbacker 4003 or Fender P-Bass Vintage 1957?

5th November

My original bass guitar was 1957 Fender P-Bass. I was forced to sell it back to the person I bought it from and I ended up buying a low level Ibanez GSR200 (I bought my a while ago, back when they only had one volume and two tone nobs). I’m in the market to buy a new bass guitar, and I’m torn between a Rickenbacker 4003 and a vintage/reissue Fender 1957 P-Bass. Both sound really good and look equally impressive. The kind of music I play is very broad, ranging from sock-hop 60’s music to thrash/death metal. The music I don’t play is Country and Blues. Opinions? Thoughts? Feedback? All comments are welcome.
One more thing. I'm not into slap bass or any other kind of "fancy bass playing." Nothing against it, just not my style.

I had a Ric years ago……….to me a Ric sounds like a Ric….very unique. I was into a lot of different music, and found my Jazz bass more versatile then the Ric or the P bass. I loved the Ric, but it was really not an ALL ROUND instrument for me. I guess the best thing is to get out to music stores and experiment with different basses/amps/effects to find the happy medium…….OR…..start buying different basses for different sounds. Expensive, but fun!!!!!!!

Good luck
